Custom Training Program Testimonial
"The Vacuum and Electrical class has made a huge impact on the exhaust processors. They have been more involved in troubleshooting and have taken ownership of process. I have seen remarkable improvements from the processors that have attended the courses. They can identify problems and troubleshoot it before it becomes too critical. Some processors have also become excellent trainers and been promoted into leadership positions. I just want to say that the investment that Northrop Grumman put into our employees is well worth it. I have seen the return from our department yield, reduction of preprocessed product and less operator errors. I would like to thank you for having the classes here at our facility and also working around or schedules [so] all shifts could attend the classes. Keep up the good work."
- Northrop Grumman Exhaust Supervisor, on customized training from GateWay Community College.

What is an externship?
The Maricopa County Community Colleges are working with local companies to prepare the next generation of technicians and engineers. The High Tech Workforce Initiative Externship program, funded by the National Science Foundation, brings together companies with new technology and faculty members who want to update their curriculum.
Industry partners invite an experienced expert and educator to work on-site with their company for two to six weeks as an extern. Faculty members from manufacturing-related programs at the Maricopa Community Colleges collaborate with the company to complete a mutually beneficial project. Externs will use their expertise to benefit the company, and industry partners help the externs enhance their knowledge of emerging technologies. The externs will capture that knowledge in new curriculum for community colleges across the valley.
The experience is called an externship because participants are qualified professionals. Unlike interns just getting their feet wet in industry, our faculty externs typically have years of experience as technicians, engineers, project managers, and quality control.

What benefit does the company receive?
- Workforce Training
Industry partners have a unique opportunity to help shape their current and future workforce through externships. By working with a faculty member at the Maricopa County Community Colleges, industry partners have a direct link to the curriculum (and sometimes its delivery) that is extremely valuable. At the end of each externship, the faculty member reviews the curriculum they want to imbed in their courses. At numerous times during the process, the industry partner can provide insight into common technologies and practices being used at that time. The partner can also begin to discuss the types of innovations they see changing the workplace. Whether it be a new technology or better communication skills from graduates, the industry partner can work directly with the faculty member on molding the type of employee they want to see on day one (and beyond).
In response to the externship on Carbon Sequestration and Practical Applications:
"Carbon management and reduction is an emerging technical area that will impact electric utilities, corporations, governments, academia and the general public. Understanding carbon management technology options, economics, technical feasibility, and pending legislation is essential to our business strategy and success."
- Phillip Brown, President of Diversified Energy
How do I get involved?
Industry partners are encouraged to contact Jay Kahl at jay.kahl@domail.maricopa.edu or 480-731-8208. Specific outcomes for the experience itself are not required initially, as the collaboration between industry, faculty, and the colleges will help determine these through increased conversation.
